A workshop to define the National Health Interoperability Model was inaugurated in Quito on April 8, led by Vice President María José Pinto. The event forms part of efforts to fulfill the 2024-2027 Digital Health Agenda and the National Policy for Digital Transformation of the Health Sector.

The initiative aims to strengthen health services, improve care, and facilitate the management and exchange of strategic user data both nationally and regionally. This includes participation in the Pan American Health Route PH4H, a project from the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) designed to enhance continuity of patient care across countries.

Pinto said that government leadership is central to achieving immediate changes: “este proceso cuenta con el liderazgo del presidente de la República, Daniel Noboa Azín, quien ha marcado con claridad la visión de un sistema de salud moderno, integrado y centrado en las personas.” She also thanked international partners for their technical and financial support toward developing an interoperable national health model.

Ignez Tristao, IDB representative in Ecuador, said continued support is intended to bring health services closer to people. “Junto a la OPS impulsamos la Ruta Panamericana de Salud Digital, a fin que los países miembros fortalezcan sus prioridades y capacidades que faciliten la integración.”

Sonia Quezada from PAHO highlighted Ecuador’s leadership in working toward an integrated and equitable system focused on people. “la transformación digital en salud es, ante todo, una transformación de la gestión y de la gobernanza. No se trata únicamente de incorporar tecnología, sino de construir marcos institucionales sólidos, fortalecer capacidades, definir estándares y asegurar que la información se convierta en un bien público al servicio de la salud,” she said.

The Ministry of Public Health stated that these efforts set a clear path toward a modern system where technology helps manage clinical information for citizens’ benefit.
