The Trinitaria Thermoelectric Power Plant in Ecuador has resumed operations at a capacity of 125 megawatts after nine years of technical restrictions. This development follows maintenance work led by the Government of El Nuevo Ecuador and the Ministry of Environment and Energy, with execution by Corporación Eléctrica del Ecuador (CELEC EP). The project restored 40 megawatts that had previously been unavailable.
An investment of $18.1 million was allocated for this comprehensive rehabilitation, which was carried out by CELEC EP’s Electroguayas Business Unit. The work began on May 28, 2025, and took 176 days to complete. During this period, 180 temporary jobs were created, including positions for residents from the local area.
Key aspects of the rehabilitation included replacing boiler tubes and performing structural maintenance on the boiler, modernizing the turbine’s Distributed Control System (DCS), installing a new feedwater pump for the boiler, and conducting steam blowing as per manufacturer protocols before bringing the unit back online.
With this unit now available to supply energy as required by the National Electricity Operator (CENACE), there is increased stability and reliability in the electrical system serving Guayaquil and other regions in Ecuador.
“The Government of El Nuevo Ecuador reaffirms its commitment to modernize and strengthen the national electricity system, ensuring efficiency and energy sustainability for Ecuadorians,” stated officials involved in the project.
