The Trinitaria Thermoelectric Power Plant has resumed operations at 125 megawatts (MW) after nine years of technical restrictions. This was made possible through efforts by the Government of El Nuevo Ecuador and the Ministry of Environment and Energy. The Electric Corporation of Ecuador (CELEC EP) completed a major scheduled maintenance, which restored 40 MW that had previously been unavailable.

The rehabilitation project required an investment of $18.1 million and was carried out by CELEC EP Electroguayas Business Unit. Work began on May 28, 2025, and lasted for 176 days. During this period, 180 temporary jobs were created, including positions for residents from the surrounding area.

Key actions in the project included replacing tubes and structural maintenance of the boiler, modernizing the Turbine Distributed Control System (DCS), installing a new feedwater pump for the boiler, and performing steam blowing according to manufacturer protocols before returning to service.

With the unit now available for energy dispatch as required by the National Electricity Operator (CENACE), officials say this will strengthen both stability and reliability in supplying electricity to Guayaquil and other parts of Ecuador.

“The Government of El Nuevo Ecuador reaffirms its commitment to modernize and strengthen the national electrical system, guaranteeing efficiency and energy sustainability for Ecuadorians,” according to a statement from government officials.
