The Corporación Eléctrica del Ecuador (CELEC EP) announced on March 17 that its Termogas Machala II thermal power plant has increased its operational capacity by restoring a gas generator, adding 20 megawatts (MW) to the national electricity supply.
This development is part of ongoing efforts to improve the reliability of Ecuador’s energy system. The restored capacity aims to support the country’s overall electricity needs and enhance energy security.
According to CELEC EP, the generator underwent major maintenance in specialized workshops in Germany. The process included a comprehensive inspection, replacement of critical parts, and technical testing under strict industry standards for power generation equipment. The generator is part of a General Electric TM2500 unit, which allows components to be installed interchangeably among similar units. After its return from Germany, the refurbished generator was installed in unit TM2 at the Machala II plant. The previously used equipment from TM2 will now be sent abroad for similar maintenance procedures.
Currently, CELEC EP operates two units at the Bajo Alto thermal park. Two additional units are nearing completion of their maintenance in Germany. In the coming days, CELEC EP plans to send the original gas generator from unit TM2 overseas for refurbishment as part of its ongoing repowering program for the thermal park.
The government stated that these actions reinforce CELEC EP’s role as a key supporter of national energy security by utilizing natural gas for electricity generation.
