Institutions in Ecuador’s Zona 8 marked the 120th anniversary of writer Pablo Palacio’s birth with a series of activities, including informative displays, literary reviews, and artistic performances. The commemorative event aimed to highlight Palacio’s contribution to Ecuadorian literature and was organized as a civic moment that blended cultural and educational expressions.
At Unidad Educativa Fiscal José María Egas in Guayaquil, students presented biographical reviews of Palacio and read excerpts from his works such as “Ojos negros,” “Novela guillotinada,” “Las mujeres miran las estrellas,” and stories from the collection “Un hombre muerto a puntapiés.” These presentations emphasized Palacio’s innovative style and his impact on national literature.
Josué Aizaga Ruiz, the Subsecretary of Education, Sports, and Culture for the Guayaquil District (Zona 8), attended the event. He encouraged students to cultivate reading habits: “Strengthen the habit of reading as a fundamental tool for your academic and personal development.”
Johnny Rodríguez, a high school student, performed a characterization of Pablo Palacio that underscored important aspects of his life, ideas, and literary legacy. Rodríguez said events like these help him appreciate major national writers: “Remembering his legacy strengthens our cultural identity and respect for Ecuador’s literary history.”
The commemoration is part of Ecuador’s National Policy for Reading Promotion, Orality, and Book Access 2024-2030. This initiative is led by the Vice Ministry of Culture and Heritage to foster greater engagement with literature among young people.
The Ministry of Education, Sports, and Culture reaffirmed its commitment to comprehensive student education: “We are dedicated to spreading the legacy of great writers by strengthening children’s and adolescents’ connection with Ecuadorian literature.”
