Educational institutions in the provinces of Manabí and Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas marked the International Day of Women and Girls in Science with civic ceremonies and educational activities. The events aimed to highlight the contributions of women and girls in scientific fields, as well as to encourage student interest in science, technology, and innovation.
At Unidad Educativa José Aquiles Valencia, located in El Higuerón, Rocafuerte canton, a civic ceremony was held with participation from education authorities, teachers, and students. Activities included presentations on national and international women scientists, displays of school projects led by students, and readings focused on gender equity and inclusion of girls in scientific spaces.
Maximiliano Núñez Tomaselli, Zonal 4 Coordinator for Education, Sports, and Culture, presided over the event. He stated: “Promover la participación de las niñas y jóvenes en la ciencia no solo impulsa su desarrollo personal, sino que fortalece el progreso del país. Desde la educación pública seguiremos trabajando para que tengan las mismas oportunidades de aprender, crear e innovar,” which translates to “Promoting the participation of girls and young women in science not only drives their personal development but also strengthens the country’s progress. From public education we will continue working so that they have the same opportunities to learn, create and innovate.”
Hermes Salazar, rector of the institution, commented: “Estas actividades permiten motivar a nuestras niñas y adolescentes a creer en su talento y a proyectarse en áreas científicas, demostrando que la educación es una herramienta clave para transformar realidades,” meaning “These activities allow us to motivate our girls and adolescents to believe in their talent and project themselves into scientific areas, demonstrating that education is a key tool for transforming realities.”
The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to inclusive and equitable education through these initiatives.
