The educational community in Quito marked the International Day of Women and Girls in Science on February 11, a date established by the United Nations General Assembly since 2016 to highlight the contributions of women in science and the importance of linking scientific progress with gender equality.

In observance of this day, schools in Quito organized civic activities aimed at encouraging girls and adolescents to pursue interests in STEAM+H fields—science, technology, engineering, arts, mathematics, and humanities. These initiatives are part of ongoing efforts to promote inclusive and equitable education that upholds rights-based approaches.

At Benito Juárez Educational Unit, students recognized the significant role played by women scientists both nationally and internationally. The event featured reflective messages, informative posters, biographical sketches, and presentations about notable scientific achievements by Ecuadorian and global women scientists. Organizers hoped these activities would inspire younger generations.

Luis Carlos Játiva, district director, emphasized the impact of women’s participation in science and technology during his remarks. “Visibilizar el trabajo de las mujeres en las áreas STEM no es solo un acto de justicia, sino una oportunidad para que niñas, niños y adolescentes conozcan referentes reales que demuestran que el conocimiento, la innovación y la ciencia también se construyen desde miradas diversas,” he said. (Translation: “Making visible the work of women in STEM areas is not only an act of justice but also an opportunity for girls, boys, and adolescents to know real role models who show that knowledge, innovation, and science are also built from diverse perspectives.”)

The commemoration called on students, teachers, and authorities to reflect on removing barriers and reducing gender disparities while promoting scientific vocations from classrooms. The aim is to help shape the future for hundreds of girls and adolescents.

Through these actions, the Ministry of Education reaffirms its commitment to fostering inclusive and equitable education that recognizes the talent, leadership, and contributions of women and girls in science.
