The Ministry of Education, Sport and Culture, the Ecuadorian Book Chamber, and the National Library of Ecuador Eugenio Espejo announced on Apr. 7 that the Quito International Book Fair 2026 will take place from September 30 to October 4 at the Centro de Exposiciones Quito.
Organizers say the event aims to strengthen both public and private collaboration in support of Ecuador’s publishing sector and promote reading nationwide. The fair is part of the implementation of the National Policy for Reading Promotion, Orality, and Access to Books for 2024-2030. It is expected to serve as a platform for exchanging ideas, promoting national and international literary production, and facilitating meetings between authors, publishers, and citizens.
According to officials, the Ministry will provide technical guidance through its Vice Ministry of Culture and Heritage based on its experience with public policies supporting reading initiatives such as Ludobibliotecas. The ministry has also participated in international book fairs including those in Guadalajara, Frankfurt, Lima, and Bogotá.
The Ecuadorian Book Chamber confirmed its leadership role in organizing this event aligns with obligations under the Law of Books (2006) as well as a tradition dating back to 1980. Organizers have scheduled working group sessions with publishers’ guilds, booksellers, proofreaders, translators, librarians, and representatives from Casa de la Cultura Ecuatoriana on April 7-8. These sessions aim to form an Accompaniment Committee responsible for ensuring diverse programming that reflects intercultural perspectives across regions.
Key details include an expected attendance of around 45,000 visitors; use of facilities such as Simón Bolívar Pavilion; Las Caras Auditorium (children’s area); four additional auditoriums for workshops; book presentations; conferences; discussions; activities for children and youth; along with academic panels focused on industry professionals.
Organizers said this partnership between state institutions and cultural sectors seeks to deliver a technically robust fair focused on promoting reading habits while strengthening Ecuador’s cultural industry.
