The government of President Daniel Noboa Azin has recognized the importance of teachers in improving education quality by awarding permanent appointments to 30 teachers in the Galápagos province. This is the first time in eight years that the region has participated in the Merit and Opposition Contest for entry into public teaching positions.

“Today we are here to recognize what you have rightfully earned. This step formalizes your entry into the teaching profession and ensures stability for your families,” said President Noboa at the Alejandro Alvear Public Educational Unit.

The permanent appointments, with an investment of more than USD 115,000, aim to provide educational continuity, reduce staff turnover, and strengthen teaching processes in a region with unique geographical and logistical challenges.

Gilda Alcívar, Minister of Education, Sports and Culture, stated: “Our president has been clear: there is no economic or social development without quality education. Under his leadership, strengthening the teaching profession has been prioritized with a deep conviction that investing in education is investing in Ecuador’s future.”

Edison Salgado, speaking on behalf of his colleagues, said: “This achievement is not just an appointment; it is dignity for our profession and recognition for those who believe that educating is transforming lives.”

President Noboa also highlighted the need for mental and emotional care as part of quality education. As a result, ten new professionals have joined the Student Counseling Departments (DECE) in the islands.

With an investment of USD 181,000, Galápagos now has eleven specialists dedicated to child protection; previously there was only one. There are also plans to hire more than 1,500 additional DECE professionals for the Costa-Galápagos region.

“We have reversed the neglect of these departments and increased national coverage from 29% to 54%; Galápagos is a success story,” Noboa emphasized.

Dappne Rodríguez, a DECE professional, thanked President Noboa for strengthening this area within Galápagos’ educational sector to ensure student well-being—something previously lacking due to limited psychosocial support.

These measures are part of the National Government’s Teacher Appreciation Program. Across Ecuador, this initiative has resulted in around 2,000 permanent appointments and connected over 15,000 teachers through the Educa Empleo platform to guarantee ongoing stability within educational services.

“Carry this appointment with pride—as proud as we are of you—and your families will be proud too,” concluded President Noboa.
