A premature baby named Camila was discharged from Hospital Vicente Corral Moscoso in Cuenca after 93 days of medical care, according to a March 25 announcement. Camila was born weighing only 520 grams and measuring 27 centimeters, making her one of the smallest babies treated at the hospital’s neonatology service.
The event marked what hospital staff described as a significant moment for both the family and the healthcare team. The baby’s mother, Cecilia Lema, said: “Tuve un embarazo bastante complicado, me dio preclamsia severa. Mi bebita nació prematura, de bajo peso, por eso ingresó a neonatología del Hospital Vicente Corral Moscoso. Al inicio me daban pocas esperanzas de vida, pero gracias a Dios y a todo el personal, lograron salvarla. Para mí son unos ángeles, estoy muy agradecida.”
Camila received multidisciplinary care from specialists in neonatology, pediatrics, respiratory therapy, early stimulation and nursing throughout her stay. Eddy Ochoa, responsible for neonatology at the hospital said: “Durante su hospitalización recibió seguimiento neurológico, cardiológico, nutrición con leche materna y fórmula hipercalórica con buena tolerancia, así como manejo de alteraciones metabólicas e infecciosas.” Ochoa also explained that due to her low weight Camila required non-invasive mechanical ventilation until day 70 and continued to need oxygen support until discharge.
During her hospitalization Camila experienced controlled hemodynamic episodes and anemia related to prematurity that required blood transfusion. Upon discharge she weighed 1.85 kilograms and measured 43 centimeters; she is now feeding by mouth with good temperature regulation and is on home oxygen therapy under multidisciplinary follow-up.
Hospital officials say this case highlights advances in neonatal medicine as well as the dedicated work of healthcare professionals who strive daily to save lives.
