Nike has launched the Pegasus 42, introducing several upgrades and minor tweaks to its long-standing running shoe model, according to an April 24 announcement by Marathon Sports. The new version aims to enhance fit, comfort, and performance for a wide range of runners.
The Nike Pegasus series is notable for its longevity in the running world, with over four decades and more than forty iterations. This latest release continues that tradition by offering both familiar reliability and modern improvements for daily training needs.
The Pegasus 42 features a reformulated ReactX foam midsole said to be 13% more responsive than previous versions. A full-length curved Air Zoom unit is embedded in the midsole to provide greater energy return and propulsion. Other updates include a lightweight mesh upper for increased breathability, an expanded toe box for a more natural fit, and a high-abrasion waffle rubber outsole designed for traction and durability. The shoe maintains its status as a moderate-cushion neutral daily trainer with a stack height of 37 mm at the heel, 27 mm at the forefoot, and a weight of about 10.59 ounces (men’s) or 8.6 ounces (women’s).
According to Marathon Sports’ review team: “We like to learn every new model inside and out so you know exactly what to expect when sliding a shoe on for the first time.” They reported that during road tests, “the refined ReactX foam, paired with the new full length Air Zoom unit and rocker midsole design, gave us more spring and energy return through every step.” However, they also noted that while suitable for relaxed daily mileage or uptempo runs or walks, “the shoe doesn’t quite have the spring and lightweight design some runners may look for in a speedy track workout shoe,” nor does it offer ultra-soft cushioning preferred by some long-distance runners.
Pros highlighted include improved bounce from the Air Zoom unit, enhanced responsiveness from ReactX foam, better breathability from engineered mesh uppers, and extra width in the toe box. Cons mentioned are limited versatility for speed workouts or longer runs due to moderate cushioning levels as well as potential discomfort from its high (10 mm) drop among forefoot strikers.
Marathon Sports suggests comparing alternatives such as Nike’s Vomero Plus—offering higher cushioning at $179.95—or Saucony Ride 19 which provides similar stability but with an eight-millimeter offset instead of ten.
The review concludes: “Between the responsive cushioning, springy Air Zoom unit…the Pegasus has reliable features that countless runners can enjoy.” Runners are encouraged by Marathon Sports staff to take advantage of personalized gait analysis before making their selection.
