Nearly 374,000 people have completed the national registration process to access public higher education in Ecuador for the first academic period of 2026, according to an announcement from the Ministry of Education, Sport and Culture. The registration period closed on December 3, 2025.
The process is mandatory for those seeking admission to public universities, polytechnic schools, technological institutes, and higher conservatories. It also applies to specialized programs offered by institutions such as the National Police, Naval Force, Fire Department, and others.
“This mechanism guarantees a transparent and orderly admission process for the 2026 academic period, allowing proper planning of available spots together with the institutions that are part of the higher education system,” stated the ministry.
Registration was open from November 27 to December 3 on www.registrounicoedusup.gob.ec. It targeted high school graduates and students in their final year under the Costa–Insular regime for the 2025-2026 period.
The ministry emphasized that this stage is part of a multi-step process required for entry into public higher education.
Ecuador currently has 33 public universities and polytechnic schools as well as 54 technological institutes and higher conservatories. For 2025, these institutions increased their academic offerings by adding over 22,000 new places compared to the previous year.
The next step in the process will be enrollment. Prospective students interested in public universities or polytechnic schools are advised to monitor announcements regarding each institution’s internal selection procedures.
For technical and technological programs or higher conservatories, information about upcoming stages will be released through official channels by the Ministry of Education, Sport and Culture.
“With the closure of National Registration, the National Government reaffirms its commitment to a model of inclusive public higher education that is relevant to the country’s reality and oriented toward generating national development,” said officials from the ministry.
