The Ministry of Public Health (MSP) has partnered with the Junta de Beneficencia de Guayaquil (JBG) to secure a steady supply of rapid-acting human insulin for more than 100,000 diabetic patients across Ecuador. The collaboration aims to ensure uninterrupted access to essential medicines.
As part of this initiative, JBG donated 52,000 units of human insulin (100 IU/mL, 10 mL vials), equivalent to 5.2 million doses. The donation is valued at approximately $1.1 million.
The delivery took place at the MSP’s Vaccine Bank on Friday, February 27. Stalin Andino, Vice Minister of Comprehensive Health Care, and representatives from JBG attended the event.
Vice Minister Andino commented on the importance of cooperation in ensuring medicine supplies for health facilities: “Today we thank the Junta de Beneficencia for the donation of this essential medicine to provide quality care to our diabetic patients.”
Roberto Dunn, institutional manager at JBG, emphasized ongoing teamwork between MSP and JBG: “Today we have coordinated the donation of insulin and will continue supporting the acquisition of other medicines always thinking about population needs, saving lives and promoting their overall well-being.”
Ecuador’s average monthly consumption of human insulin is 6,538 units. This recent provision will cover national demand for about eight months through November 2026.
Distribution will begin immediately based on planned needs in all health establishments. The process will follow strict cold chain standards to maintain effectiveness from receipt through timely delivery to patients.
The government stated that this strategic alliance reinforces its commitment to protecting vulnerable groups and those with chronic illnesses by strengthening Ecuador’s public health system.
The ministry plans to continue joint efforts with private sector partners who support public sector initiatives, recognizing that health and well-being are shared responsibilities.
