The Ministry of Public Health (MSP) has reported the detection of a second case of Influenza A(H3N2) subclade K in the country. This identification comes as a result of ongoing surveillance protocols and monitoring of respiratory viruses.

According to the MSP, “thanks to the activation of surveillance protocols and permanent monitoring of respiratory viruses, the second case of Influenza A(H3N2) subclade K has been identified in the national territory.”

The National Epidemiological Surveillance System, in coordination with the Integrated Public Health Network, Complementary Private Network, and INSPI Reference Laboratory, is leading efforts for early detection. These actions are intended to ensure an immediate response to control virus transmission.

Regarding individual cases, authorities stated: “First case: Identified in the Austro region. The patient received timely care and is under strict medical supervision. Second case: Recently detected through the surveillance system. The patient is in stable condition; epidemiological investigation and contact tracing are underway.”

The MSP emphasized preventive measures as essential for public health protection against circulating respiratory viruses. The ministry advised citizens to get vaccinated against influenza at over 1,900 health centers nationwide where doses are provided free of charge. The current vaccination campaign targets the entire population.

Other recommendations include wearing masks if experiencing any respiratory symptoms to prevent spreading the virus, frequent handwashing with soap and water, regular disinfection of contact surfaces, seeking medical attention for warning signs instead of self-medicating.

Officials explained that “the trivalent vaccine protects against the three most prevalent viruses in Ecuador. Its formula generates specific antibodies against Influenza A(H3N2), drastically reducing pneumonia risk and hospitalization. It also provides immunity against strain A(H1N1) and type B influenza, which is mainly responsible for outbreaks in schools and closed environments.”
