The Ministry of Telecommunications and the Information Society (MINTEL), in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, Sports and Culture (MINEDEC), the Technical Private University of Loja (UTPL), and private companies, recognized 167 educational innovation proposals at the closing event of the fourth edition of the Open Challenges 2025–2026: Emerging Technologies with Purpose. The ceremony took place on February 24.

This initiative highlighted efforts from 31 educational institutions that developed technological solutions aimed at improving both educational and social environments across Ecuador.

The competition was divided into two categories: Ideation and Prototyping. A total of 167 proposals were submitted, with 115 in Ideation and 52 in Prototyping. Eleven institutions were preselected in the Ideation category.

Marco Insuasti, director of Emerging Technologies Promotion at MINTEL, commented during the event: “These initiatives demonstrate the talent and creativity of Ecuadorian students to propose real solutions to problems in our environment.” He added that the results reflect collaboration between public sector entities, academia, and private enterprise.

Awards were given based on creativity, technical feasibility, and educational impact. The top three projects included Chulla Chulla from Unidad Educativa Sudamericano de Cuenca; Planta de Clasificación y NTransformación de Residuos Orgánicos from Unidad Educativa La Dolorosa de Loja; and Alerta Vial from Unidad Educativa Internacional Scholastic Model de Quito.

Winners will receive support aimed at strengthening technical development, business training, and connections with institutional networks to help bring their projects into practical use.

The next selection and award event for Prototyping Projects is scheduled for March 3, 2026, at UTPL’s Quito campus on Av. 6 de Diciembre N31-47 y Alpallana starting at 08:30.

MINTEL continues to lead digital transformation efforts in Ecuador by developing strategies that involve public institutions, private sector organizations, academic communities, and civil society.
