A pilot project aimed at reducing forest fires has begun in the Machángara River basin, which spans the provinces of Azuay and Cañar. The initiative is being carried out in the parishes of Sinincay (Cuenca) and Gualleturo (Cañar), following Ecuador’s selection as a pilot country for this international strategy.
The intervention covers 41,820 hectares that include both protected forests and productive areas. This region supplies more than 60% of Cuenca’s drinking water. The project aims to decrease forest fire incidents by 20% in this area.
The Ministry of Environment and Energy (MAE) leads the project through its Amazonía Sin Fuego Program (PASF). Funding comes from the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) via the Wildfire Action Accelerator, with implementation by Hivos. The goal is to strengthen integrated fire management with actions focused on prevention, response, and building resilience to wildfires.
The initiative includes awareness campaigns, development of management plans, field schools, distribution of specialized equipment, and training for local communities, brigade members, park rangers, hydroelectric operators, and territorial authorities. These activities are based on participatory governance and shared responsibility.
According to the press release: “La ejecución del proyecto es resultado de la alianza estratégica suscrita entre el MAE y EDF en el marco de la COP30, realizada en Brasil en noviembre de 2025, que permitió al país integrarse a esta plataforma internacional para fortalecer sus capacidades de prevención y respuesta frente a incendios forestales.”
With this effort, Ecuador’s government seeks to reinforce protection for strategic ecosystems while enhancing international cooperation and strengthening water security and environmental protection across the country.
