The Marcel Laniado de Wind hydroelectric plant, which has a capacity of 213 megawatts and is part of the Jaime Roldós Aguilera Multipurpose Complex, began scheduled maintenance on January 30, 2026. The work will last for 19 days and involves all three generation units at the facility in El Empalme, Guayas province. The maintenance is being carried out by Corporación Eléctrica del Ecuador (CELEC EP) and focuses on corrective tasks for the plant’s hydraulic equipment.
According to Inés Manzano, Minister of Environment and Energy, this intervention was possible because Ecuador currently has enough electricity supply to meet national demand. “Ecuador is on. Strategic planning allows us to carry out these works that strengthen our electrical system. We have put our entire thermal and hydroelectric park at maximum. We are fine, we are on,” said Manzano.
During the maintenance period, technicians from CELEC EP Hidronación Business Unit will work on the three butterfly valves that control water flow into the turbines and protect the overall system. This intervention follows a technical plan aimed at improving operational safety, reliability of the electric system, and continuity of service. Technical and operational criteria were considered to minimize any impact on the national grid, especially in Manabí.
Throughout the maintenance period, an ecological flow rate of 92 cubic meters per second will be maintained to ensure continued water supply for potable use in several cantons in Guayas.
The government of El Nuevo Ecuador and CELEC EP stated their commitment to responsible management of electrical infrastructure by prioritizing preventive actions to avoid unplanned failures and ensure reliable service for citizens.
