Marathon Sports released on Apr. 28 a detailed review of the New Balance Ellipse v1, a new daily running shoe that aims to combine comfort, performance, and style.
The review is significant for runners looking for a versatile shoe that can handle both long runs and everyday use. The Ellipse v1 is positioned as an affordable option with plush cushioning and a retro-inspired design.
According to Marathon Sports, the Ellipse features Fresh Foam X technology in its midsole, providing a soft and responsive ride. The stack height measures 37.9 mm at the heel and 29.9 mm at the forefoot with an 8 mm drop. The men’s version weighs 9.6 ounces while the women’s weighs 7.7 ounces. The upper uses breathable mesh material with multiple layers for support and ventilation, along with stretch laces, a gusseted tongue, and an internal liner for customizable fit.
“The Ellipse may be a brand new model, but that doesn’t mean New Balance started completely from scratch,” said Marathon Sports in its review. “Like other models in the Fresh Foam X family, the Ellipse delivers a plush underfoot ride with consistent comfort from heel-to-toe.” The review team noted that sizing runs short and recommended considering half a size up for best fit.
In road tests conducted by Marathon Sports staff across various types of runs—including long distances and speed workouts—the shoe was praised for its softness on relaxed runs but found less suitable for faster-paced training due to its cushioning profile: “This plush ride will likely feel a bit too soft and spongy when you’re trying to shift into a faster gear during speed workouts,” said Marathon Sports.
Comparisons were made between the Ellipse v1 and similar models such as Asics Novablast and New Balance’s own Fresh Foam X 880 v15; reviewers highlighted that while all offer comfort, the re-tuned foam in the Ellipse feels softer than previous versions at an accessible price point ($144.95).
Marathon Sports concluded by encouraging customers to try shoes on before purchasing: “But learning about running shoe models is only part of the equation when it comes to finding your next pair… You don’t have to go at it alone.”
