Marathon Sports released a review on Apr. 6 of the Brooks Glycerin Max 2, the latest version of Brooks’ max-cushioned daily trainer that first launched in 2024. The review examines the shoe’s comfort, features, and performance across various running conditions.
Max-cushioned shoes have become popular among runners for their plush foam and impact absorption. The Glycerin Max series entered this market with a new nitrogen-infused DNA Tuned foam and high stack height, aiming to provide a soft yet stable ride for long-distance runners.
The Marathon Sports review team tested the Glycerin Max 2 on different terrains and types of runs, from track workouts to slow runs on icy roads. They highlighted features such as its triple jacquard mesh upper for breathability, GlideRoll rocker technology for smooth transitions, sculpted heel bevel and wide base for stability, and a high-coverage rubber outsole designed to improve traction and durability. The shoe is available at $199.95 in both men’s (11.3 oz) and women’s (10.2 oz) versions.
According to the review, “Brooks first released its revolutionary DNA Tuned foam in the first iteration of the Glycerin Max, and we’re happy to report that the newest version relies on a high stack height of the same well-balanced nitrogen-infused cushioning.” Reviewers noted that while some expected an overly soft feel due to its stack height—45 mm at the heel—the midsole offered balanced cushioning without feeling spongy or unstable.
The updated upper design was praised: “The Glycerin Max 2 features a new triple jacquard mesh upper for a more streamlined and secure feel… securely wrapping the foot with extra padding for unmatched lockdown and comfort.” Despite being thicker than before, reviewers said it remained lightweight with good breathability.
Stability was another focus area; although classified as neutral (not correcting overpronation), design elements like GlideRoll rocker geometry paired with a wide platform provided inherent support during long runs. However, testers found drawbacks: “With such a high stack height… we found that the Glycerin Max 2 felt a bit heavy and bulky as we tried to pick up the pace during track workouts or uptempo road runs.” At over ten ounces per shoe depending on size, it is heavier than previous versions or comparable models from other brands.
In comparing alternatives like Nike’s Vomero Plus or Brooks’ Ghost Max 3—which offers less bulk—the review suggests runners consider their needs before purchasing: those seeking maximum cushion for long miles may appreciate this model despite its weight; those wanting versatility might look elsewhere.
Concluding their assessment, Marathon Sports said: “If you’re looking for a well-cushioned, comfortable shoe to absorb impact…the Glycerin Max 2’s high stack height and padded construction might be for you…While it may not be the most versatile shoe, our review team felt this shoe shines on long runs.”
