Seven patients at the Hospital de Especialidades Guayaquil Dr. Abel Gilbert Pontón have received cochlear implants, allowing them to recover their hearing after experiencing severe to profound hearing loss. According to the Ministry of Public Health (MSP), these procedures are part of a broader commitment to providing comprehensive care for priority patients in Ecuador.
The cochlear implant surgery is designed for individuals with bilateral hearing loss who no longer benefit from conventional hearing aids. The procedure directly stimulates the auditory nerve, enabling the brain to receive sound signals and gradually restore auditory perception.
A multidisciplinary team leads the intervention process, including specialists in otolaryngology, audiology, psychology, cardiology, anesthesiology, rehabilitation, social work, and imaging. This team supports patients through all phases of care: before surgery, during the operation, and throughout recovery.
“For this year 2026 we plan to expand the cochlear implant program, which demonstrates the progressive reach of these interventions and our institutional goal to improve access to complex procedures for people with disabilities,” stated hospital representatives.
The government has also reiterated its intention to enhance innovation in public health services and improve quality of life for citizens through such initiatives.
