The Hospital Básico de Sangolquí of the Ministry of Public Health resumed its surgical services in March, according to an April 2 announcement. The decision was made by Vice President María José Pinto and aims to provide comprehensive and timely care for approximately 114,000 residents of Rumiñahui canton and nearby areas.
The hospital is equipped with the necessary technology and staffed by skilled professionals to ensure effective and quality care. Technical support has also been provided to strengthen the hospital’s capacity, ensuring continuity in surgical services and reducing the need for patient referrals to other facilities.
Patient Javier Ortega thanked the hospital staff for their work, saying, “There is a lot of warmth from doctors and health professionals before and during surgery.” Ortega also noted improvements in service delivery in recent days.
This initiative seeks to gradually reduce the backlog of surgeries at Hospital Básico Sangolquí. So far, forty operations have been performed, including eighteen vasectomies as well as procedures on lipomas and inguinal hernias.
Sinaly Maiga, director of the hospital, said that a weekly schedule includes five surgeries per day—two major procedures and three minor ones. Scheduled interventions include vasectomies, excision of lipomas, hernioplasties among others. “We have qualified personnel in general surgery and are building trust within our community. In addition, our goal is to expand this service to reach people living in Conocoto and Machachi under the premise of providing good treatment to users,” Maiga said.
The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to optimizing state resources while strengthening Ecuador’s public health network.
