The Hospital Gineco Obstétrico Pediátrico de Nueva Aurora Luz Elena Arismendi (HGONA) has marked its tenth anniversary as a leading national institution for maternal and child health. Over the past decade, HGONA has expanded its specialized services, including fetal medicine and surgery, gynecologic oncology, and oncological gynecological surgery. These additions have enabled the hospital to handle complex cases within the Public Integrated Health Network (RPIS), reducing the need for patient transfers and ensuring timely care.
In 2024, HGONA enhanced its diagnostic and treatment capabilities by introducing a 16-slice Computed Axial Tomography scanner, an Evoked Potentials Room, and otoacoustic emissions equipment. These upgrades have strengthened neonatal and pediatric care. That same year, the hospital performed its first artificial intelligence-assisted cranioplasty in a public facility.
Diego Vaca, manager of HGONA, emphasized that these achievements stem from the dedication of the staff and an institutional focus on excellence. “Quality public health is not built only with infrastructure or technology but with motivated, trained teams committed to life. This hospital has shown that it is possible to practice high-complexity medicine with warmth and humanity,” said Vaca.
In terms of quality and humanization, HGONA was recertified in 2024 as a Mother- and Child-Friendly Health Establishment (ESAMyN) with a score of 98.01%. The hospital also received accreditation as an Adolescent-Friendly Hospital and recognition from ARCSA for Good Pharmacovigilance Practices. Citizen satisfaction levels at HGONA have remained above 90%.
The hospital’s academic profile was strengthened with the opening of the first Clinical Simulation Center HGONA–UCE, which has benefited more than 2,600 professionals and students by improving medical training, patient safety, and emergency response preparedness.
At the commemorative event marking ten years of service, Stalin Andino, Vice Minister of Comprehensive Health Care, highlighted HGONA’s strategic role in addressing major public health challenges such as preventing chronic child malnutrition. “Quality neonatal care is a powerful prevention tool,” said Andino. He also noted that there had been 937 days without a direct maternal death at the hospital—a milestone he described as worthy of recognition.
These accomplishments demonstrate the commitment of the Ministry of Public Health—alongside its leadership team and HGONA staff—to building accessible, humane, innovative public healthcare that supports life from its earliest stages.
