The Gun community in the San Andrés de Taday parish, Cañar province, has a new sanitary sewer system and wastewater treatment plant. The project benefits 344 residents living near the Mazar and Alazán power plants, which are operated by CELEC Sur.
The infrastructure was built with an investment of $192,158 provided by Corporación Eléctrica del Ecuador (CELEC EP). The initiative involved collaboration between CELEC EP, the Municipal Water and Sewerage Company of Azogues (EMAPAL EP), which oversaw technical supervision, and the local parish government of San Andrés de Taday.
The new system addresses previous issues related to unsanitary conditions, unpleasant odors, and environmental impacts. It aims to improve public health and overall quality of life for families in the area. The project included installing 30 wastewater treatment systems over 27.65 hectares. For 30 families living in remote areas, individual biodigesters were set up to ensure effective coverage adapted to local needs.
This intervention is part of CELEC Sur’s Community Relations Plan and expands rural sewerage coverage in Azogues. Rosa Sucuzhañay, a resident of Gun, said: “After a decade of waiting, our dream comes true thanks to CELEC EP; we had a provisional sewer that caused pollution and discomfort in the neighborhood, but now we see real change for us and future generations.”
Miguel Andrade, manager of CELEC Sur Business Unit, commented on the corporation’s work under the vision of the Government of El Nuevo Ecuador: “This project is possible thanks to the commitment of the Government of El Nuevo Ecuador, which has been clear in its message: development must come with real, concrete and sustainable actions to communities. At CELEC EP we work so that this commitment becomes reality.”
According to officials involved in the project, these efforts are intended to support sustainable development goals while improving environmental management practices around hydroelectric plants.
