Student participation and improvements to educational infrastructure were the focus of a recent event in Gualaceo, where local authorities, students, and members of the education community worked together to promote democracy and enhance the quality of education.
At Santo Domingo de Guzmán Private Educational Unit, about 80 students from various schools took part in district meetings of Student Councils. Using the “La Voz del Cambio” methodology, these gatherings encouraged dialogue, idea exchange, and reflection on democracy, civic engagement, and voluntary voting. The goal was to foster critical thinking and active citizenship among students.
A new auditorium was also inaugurated at Alfonso Lituma Correa Educational Unit. This facility will serve 725 students. The project was made possible by a contribution of USD 15,000 from the Municipality of Gualaceo as well as support from parents and the District Education Office 01D04 Gualaceo–Chordeleg. The new space is intended for academic, cultural, and community activities.
José Luis Romero, district director, stated: “The investment in educational infrastructure creates dignified environments that enhance learning and strengthen the entire educational community.”
Marcela Villavicencio, Zonal Education Coordinator for Zone 6, emphasized inter-institutional cooperation: “This allows us to improve educational infrastructure and create dignified spaces that directly benefit girls, boys and adolescents.”
The day ended at Nicanor Aguilar Maldonado Educational Unit in San Juan parish with the opening of upgraded facilities including 19 restroom units and 11 sinks. These improvements are expected to provide safer and healthier conditions for students.
According to officials, these efforts demonstrate an ongoing commitment by the Ministry of Education, Sports and Culture to encourage student participation, improve school facilities nationwide, and ensure quality education for all citizens.
