The government led by Daniel Noboa has upgraded the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at the Dr. José Daniel Rodríguez Maridueña Infectology Hospital in Guayaquil, a facility under the Ministry of Public Health. The initiative was managed by Vice President María José Pinto and aims to improve care for critically ill patients and ensure timely and safe health services.
The improvements included significant updates to the physical infrastructure, such as replacing the air conditioning system and installing high-quality self-leveling epoxy flooring with a 10-year warranty. These changes are intended to reduce bacterial contamination risks and raise standards for efficiency and quality in patient care.
The ICU is now equipped with modern medical devices, including turbine ventilators, electric hemodynamic beds designed to stabilize cardiovascular function, improve circulation, optimize breathing, and allow for easy posture adjustments for critical patients. Other technological additions include multiparameter monitors, infusion pumps with centralized monitoring support, a cardio-defibrillator, a 12-lead electrocardiograph, an emergency cart, and other essential intensive therapy devices.
“Our ICU offers a range of services focused on high-complexity care and management of neurocritical patients, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, complex postoperative care, advanced life support with mechanical ventilation and invasive monitoring, specialized management of severe infections,” said hospital manager Karla Alvarado V.
She also noted that services follow an integrated approach that centers both patients and their families in every decision. “Thanks to the families who trust us during the most difficult moments of their lives,” she added.
The operational capacity of the ICU is designed to enhance emergency response and improve conditions for comprehensive care of critical patients. The healthcare staff is trained to efficiently handle emergencies around the clock throughout the year without interruption.
A family member of one beneficiary highlighted the human and professional approach taken by healthcare workers during her relative’s treatment: “We have received timely and quality care; doctors and nursing staff keep us constantly informed about his progress, which gives us peace of mind and confidence in the treatment he receives.”
The Ministry of Public Health reiterated its commitment to continuously strengthening services at the Infectology Hospital while prioritizing patient safety, comprehensive attention based on quality standards, ethics, and humanized medical care.
