The Ecuadorian government has restored 368 megawatts (MW) of power to the national electricity system following maintenance work at the Agoyán and San Francisco hydroelectric plants. The maintenance, carried out in January, was part of a technical plan established by Corporación Eléctrica del Ecuador (CELEC EP). The work was scheduled for a period considered optimal for the operation of the electrical system to avoid disruptions in energy supply.
The project was coordinated by the National Electricity Operator (CENACE) and promoted by the Ministry of Environment and Energy (MAE). CELEC EP executed the maintenance between January 16 and January 26 with specialized technical teams. The interventions included both preventive and corrective actions on strategic infrastructure, some of which have been operating for over 38 years. According to officials, these efforts are intended to strengthen security, reliability, and extend the useful life of the facilities.
As a result, two generation units at Agoyán, with a combined installed capacity of 156 MW, and one unit at San Francisco, with an installed capacity of 212 MW, have resumed operations. Together, these facilities contribute 368 MW to Ecuador’s National Interconnected System.
“The remaining unit at San Francisco will be incorporated into the system on Wednesday, January 28th, completing full availability of the hydroelectric complex and contributing to stability and continuity of electric service for Ecuadorians,” according to CELEC EP.
