The government announced on April 7 that the rehabilitation of the E484 Palestina-Macul-Vinces road is progressing, with work now 70 percent complete. The project, which involves an investment of over USD 14.5 million, aims to benefit more than 98,000 people in the provinces of Los Ríos and Guayas.

The importance of this infrastructure upgrade lies in its potential to improve local connectivity and stimulate economic activity by reducing transportation costs and travel times for residents and businesses. Officials say the improved road will also enhance quality of life for communities along its route.

Roberto Luque, Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, said that rehabilitating the 29.2-kilometer stretch will support local economic activities such as cacao and rice production. “Lo importante son los sectores productivos que hay aquí: cacao, arroz, todo lo que se mueve en esta zona,” Luque said. He added that a new asphalt layer with a thickness of 10 centimeters is being used to ensure durability.

Local residents have expressed optimism about the improvements. José Vicente Gómez, an agricultural producer from the area, said: “Estoy contento y con esperanza alentadora de contar con esta vía.” Alfredo Gómez, a transport worker, said families would benefit from lower vehicle maintenance costs and shorter travel times as a result of the upgraded road.

According to officials involved in the project, more than 110 direct and indirect jobs have been created during construction. The government states that these infrastructure investments are part of a broader effort to guarantee safe and efficient mobility while supporting equitable development across Ecuador.
