The Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport (MIT) is moving forward with the rehabilitation of the Chontaduro – Chumundé road in Esmeraldas province. The project, which covers 17.05 kilometers, has reached 33 percent completion. The total investment amounts to $8.1 million, including tax and oversight costs.
The road is considered important for rural mobility in the region. It facilitates the safe and timely transport of agricultural products such as bananas, dragon fruit, and cassava, as well as livestock production. This is expected to strengthen local supply chains and stimulate the economy for more than 63,000 residents.
César Bustos, MIT’s district director in Esmeraldas, stated: “So far, activities have included clearing and cleaning the right-of-way, forming and improving subdrains, transporting and laying stone material, building drainage works, cleaning existing bridges, and water channeling works. In addition, technicians and specialists are conducting environmental controls and provisional signage has been installed in work areas.”
According to officials, rehabilitating this road aims to improve rural infrastructure and road safety by optimizing market access, reducing travel times, and enhancing connectivity for local communities.
“This intervention is part of a territorial work vision aimed at connecting communities, promoting local development, and ensuring road infrastructure that meets the real needs of citizens,” an official statement said.
