The Ministry of Telecommunications and the Information Society inaugurated three new Free Digital Points on March 19 in the province of Santa Elena. The initiative aims to benefit more than 13,000 residents in the communities of San Antonio, Barcelona de Manglaralto, and Manantial de Guangala by improving access to technology and promoting digital inclusion.

The launch is part of a broader public policy led by the Government of Nuevo Ecuador to reduce the digital divide and ensure that more citizens can take advantage of technological opportunities. The government says these efforts are especially focused on rural areas where connectivity has traditionally lagged behind urban centers.

Minister Roberto Kury said during the event that “our objective is clear: that the technology reaches every corner of the country and becomes a tool for progress for communities.” He also stated that infrastructure is now “the backbone of national development,” emphasizing that combining digital infrastructure with human talent is key to transforming Ecuador.

The inauguration ceremony took place at the community house in San Antonio, Manglaralto parish, Santa Elena canton. It was attended by provincial governor Xavier Negrete, local authorities, institutional partners, and members of the community.

Currently, there are 25 Free Digital Points in Santa Elena province serving more than 323,000 people. Over 9,000 citizens have received training at these sites, which promote internet access, digital skills development, and use of online public services.

With these new facilities open to the public, officials say they are continuing their commitment to advancing Ecuador’s digital transformation by expanding equitable access to technology and creating more opportunities for development.
