The Government, led by President Daniel Noboa, delivered 100 certificates on Apr. 2 to users of the Mega Punto Digital Gratuito Colinas del Norte in El Condado parish, Quito. The event was part of an ongoing effort to promote digital inclusion and reduce the digital divide.
The initiative is organized by the Ministry of Telecommunications and Information Society (MINTEL) and aims to empower citizens through training in information and communication technologies.
Víktor Águila, subsecretary for Information Society Promotion and Digital Economy at MINTEL, said: “El Mega Punto Digital Gratuito Colinas del Norte más que un lugar con 42 computadoras; es un motor de aprendizaje y convivencia donde se transforman realidades y se construyen nuevas oportunidades.”
Maribel Ibargüen, a local entrepreneur who attended the ceremony, described how access to free internet, technical training, and ongoing support from facilitators at the center has benefited her community.
According to information provided during the event, there are currently 70 free digital points in Pichincha province alone. These centers have served more than one million residents with over 912,000 visits recorded and more than 46,000 people trained across 56 parishes in seven cantons. Nationwide there are a total of 988 such centers.
Officials say these efforts are designed to bring technology closer to citizens while promoting opportunities for development throughout Ecuador.
