The National Government, through the Ministry of Environment and Energy and Empresa Eléctrica Riobamba S.A. (EERSA), has completed a public lighting improvement project in Chambo, Chimborazo province. The initiative involved an investment of USD 149,000 and is expected to benefit more than two thousand residents.
As part of the project, 197 sodium lamps were replaced with LED luminaires along six kilometers of electrical network in the main parish of Chambo. This upgrade is estimated to save approximately 127,080 kWh of electricity per month.
José Merlo, a resident from the central area of Chambo, noted that the old yellow sodium lights had operational deficiencies that made walking on the streets difficult. “Las otras luces ya no alumbraban como es debido, pero ahora ya está bien claro, podemos salir a dar una vuelta por los terrenos, a regar agua tranquilamente en las noches,” he said.
Similarly, Jeremías Zavala commented on how improved lighting contributes to public safety at night. “Es un buen trabajo, ya que piensan en las personas, eso nos ayuda también a los trabajos, para atender hasta más tarde,” he stated.
The installation of LED streetlights is part of national energy efficiency plans led by the Ministry of Environment and Energy across Ecuador. EERSA continues its efforts in both urban and rural areas within Chimborazo province to enhance lighting standards using modern and environmentally friendly technology.
