A total of 4,705 surgeries were performed at the Homero Castanier Crespo General Hospital in Azogues from January to December 2025. The hospital conducted both planned and emergency procedures, which officials say has improved access to critical surgical care for residents in the city and surrounding areas.
Of the surgeries carried out, 2,550 were scheduled procedures such as laparoscopic cholecystectomy, exploratory laparotomy, and repairs of abdominal, digestive, and thyroid hernias. Emergency surgeries accounted for 2,155 cases, including treatments for appendicitis, abdominal trauma, acute cholecystitis, and other biliary system conditions. This volume indicates the hospital’s ability to address urgent medical situations effectively.
General surgery was in highest demand during this period. Other specialties with significant activity included obstetric surgery, traumatology, upper and lower endoscopies, vascular surgery, plastic surgery, otolaryngology (ENT), and urology.
The hospital reported having operational operating rooms equipped with updated technology. One operating room features a laparoscopic tower. New equipment added includes surgical lamps and electrosurgical units with vessel sealing systems designed to improve the efficiency and safety of operations.
According to officials at the facility: “These results reflect the institutional work to enhance surgical safety and continuous improvement in the quality of care provided to families in Cañar province.”
