Fernanda Moncada, a speed skater from Loja, Ecuador, began her athletic career at just four years old. Inspired by her sister Renata, a celebrated local and national champion, Moncada aspired to become a leading figure in the sport both nationally and internationally.
Her ambition was realized when she won the title of world champion in speed skating at the Speed World Championship 2025. This achievement is considered significant for Ecuadorian sports and demonstrates the high level of competition that can be reached through discipline and determination.
Moncada’s career includes not only victories but also defeats, which she says have contributed to her personal and athletic growth. “Me siento orgullosa de representar a mi país, siempre doy lo mejor de mí en cada competencia. El deporte ecuatoriano ha crecido gracias al coraje de mujeres que se atrevieron a creer en sí mismas; figuras como Glenda Morejón, Neisi Dajomes, Lucia Yepez nos recuerdan que con determinación podemos dejar huella dentro y fuera del país,” Moncada said.
Her sporting record includes being world champion in 2025, placing fourth at the WRG in Spain in 2019, winning four South American championships in 2019, selection for Ecuador’s national team, several national championships, recognition as best athlete at the National Junior Games 2016, and holding titles as national champion in all endurance events.
Through consistent effort and rigorous training over many years, Moncada has established herself as an example for young athletes across Ecuador. Her international success highlights the role women play in advancing sports within the country.
On this occasion, attention is drawn to women athletes who continue to break barriers and contribute to building a more equitable society. The story of Fernanda Moncada underscores how sports can serve as a tool for social transformation and female empowerment.
