On January 24, Gilda Alcívar García, Minister of Education, Sports and Culture, led a meeting with representatives from 11 teachers’ unions as part of the “Dialogue for Education” initiative. The event was attended by Vice Minister of Educational Management Juan Carlos Rodríguez, Vice Minister of Education José Luis Torres, and the technical team from the ministry.
Minister Alcívar stated that this engagement is part of an effort to build solutions through consensus. “We proposed dialogue because we firmly believe in participation and in the collective construction of educational policy,” she said. She emphasized that working together with unions and associations is essential to advance toward quality education.
The minister also highlighted the shared responsibility in improving education. “We all work for a common good: the development of our country. The results we hope to see respond to both current circumstances and sustained efforts, which require commitment from all actors in the educational system,” Alcívar added.
She noted that having 11 unions, associations, and federations involved demonstrates a genuine interest in collaborative work. “The fact that there are 11 unions, associations and federations in this space shows real interest in working together,” she said.
The Dialogue for Education aims to create a participatory forum to address issues affecting Ecuador’s National Education System, gather concerns from educators, and generate responses that contribute to building and strengthening public education policy.
This dialogue process aligns with strategic actions promoted by the Ministry of Education. These include teacher professionalization programs, merit-based competitions for teaching positions, reclassification initiatives, support for Student Counseling Departments (DECE), and efforts to create safe educational communities—all elements outlined as priorities for comprehensive improvement of Ecuador’s national education system.
