The Subsecretariat of Education, Sports, and Culture Zone 9 held the “Somos Herederas de Derechos: Arquitectas de Caminos” event on March 6 to mark International Women’s Day. The gathering aimed to encourage dialogue and reflection on gender equality, female leadership, and the active participation of girls and adolescents in education.
The event took place at the Auditorium of the Vice Ministry of Higher Education. It brought together education authorities, teachers, professionals from the Student Counseling Department (DECE), and students. Participants shared experiences about building inclusive educational environments that ensure equal opportunities and foster leadership among new generations.
A panel discussion titled “Arquitectas de Caminos,” moderated by students, featured María José Moyano, Subsecretary of Education, Sports, and Culture for Quito; Belén Zapata, a teacher at Miguel Moreno Espinosa Specialized School for the Deaf; Rebeca Guevara from DECE; and Nicole Valentina Tatayo Cacuango, a student at Los Shyris Educational Unit. Panelists discussed strengthening gender equality in classrooms, encouraging girls’ participation in various fields of knowledge, and recognizing education as a key tool for promoting female leadership that can help transform society.
María José Moyano said these spaces make it possible to highlight student leadership and strengthen their role in building a more equitable society. “Las niñas y adolescentes no solo heredan derechos conquistados por otras mujeres, también son protagonistas del presente y arquitectas de los caminos que construirán el futuro,” Moyano said.
According to organizers, initiatives like this reaffirm the commitment of the Subsecretariat of Education, Sports, and Culture Zone 9 to continue promoting inclusive education with a rights-based approach that supports equal opportunities and strengthens the leadership of girls both inside and outside classrooms.
