The government of Ecuador is taking steps to improve access to health services for vulnerable populations, with a focus on people with physical disabilities. President Daniel Noboa and Vice President María José Pinto are working together to strengthen specialized rehabilitation services within the Ministry of Public Health.
As part of these efforts, the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Service at Isidro Ayora General Hospital in Loja organized a technical meeting aimed at reactivating and strengthening orthotics and prosthetics laboratories. The event brought together officials from the provincial government, representatives from Zonal Coordination 7 – Health, delegates from laboratories in Quito and Guayaquil, academic professionals, healthcare workers, and other key stakeholders involved in specialized rehabilitation processes.
Benjamín Celi, manager of Isidro Ayora Hospital, said that this initiative will help consolidate actions through public policies. “The contributions generated will be elevated to the national level through a participatory proposal, resulting from the analysis and technical feedback of the session,” he stated.
Andrés Fierro, representing the Governor’s office, noted that this technical space will allow for more effective outreach to vulnerable populations by promoting continuous improvement processes and enhancing existing services.
Edgar Andrés Vinueza, medical director of the Specialized Center for Comprehensive Rehabilitation (CERI) in Quito, emphasized that the technical meeting creates important opportunities to establish a technical and academic space focused on improving care processes with an emphasis on service quality and efficiency.
The Ministry of Public Health reaffirmed its commitment to continue fostering technical and participatory spaces that support building a coordinated national network of orthotics and prosthetics laboratories. The goal is to make this network efficient and sustainable while contributing to better quality of life for people with disabilities.
