The National Committee on Energy Efficiency (CNEE) held its sixth ordinary session in Quito on February 5, 2026, where it established a roadmap to promote rational and sustainable energy use in Ecuador.

During the meeting, committee members reviewed and validated progress on the National Energy Efficiency Plan (PLANEE), which guides efforts to reduce energy consumption, optimize resources, strengthen national energy security, and address climate change. The session included representatives from the public sector, industry, academia, and local governments.

Alicia Jaramillo Cabo, Deputy Minister of Environment and Marine Coastal Affairs and chair of the session by designation of the highest authority, stated: “This meeting is an exercise in strategic responsibility regarding the energy transition that the country requires with the aim of optimizing responsible energy consumption, with a commitment to strengthening economic competitiveness and guaranteeing citizens’ right to a healthy environment. We must remember that PLANEE does not only define efficiency; it is not about ‘using less,’ but about using energy better.”

Key decisions were made during the session:

– The PLANEE will be updated to align with decarbonization goals and national energy security.
– An official schedule for CNEE sessions was set to ensure quarterly monitoring as required by law.
– The advisory role of the Consultative Council was recognized. It was tasked with developing technical proposals for industry and transport sectors focusing on financing and incentives.
– Continued management of the National Investment Fund for Energy Efficiency was instructed to finance high-impact sustainable projects nationwide.

The CNEE coordinates policies aimed at more efficient energy use, cost reduction, productivity improvement, and contributing to climate change mitigation.

The Ministry of Environment and Energy emphasized its ongoing leadership in implementing sustainability policies that support energy savings, cost reductions, productive competitiveness, and environmental protection. These measures are intended to consolidate energy efficiency as a pillar of development while preparing for future energy challenges.
