The government of Ecuador announced on March 27 that it has secured a $23 million non-reimbursable grant from the Green Climate Fund for a new project aimed at reducing climate risks and improving resilience in rural areas. The initiative, called ‘Strengthening Community Resilience to the Adverse Effects of Climate Change, with Emphasis on Food Security and Gender Approaches in Priority Territories of Ecuador’ (FORECCSA+), was approved during the fund’s Board 44 meeting.
The project is led by the Ministry of Environment and Energy in coordination with the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, with implementation support from the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture. It aims to benefit more than 344,000 people across eleven provinces identified as high-risk due to climate vulnerability. Key goals include strengthening food security, improving water management, and consolidating productive systems.
Total investment for FORECCSA+ will reach $35.6 million when combined with approximately $12.3 million in co-financing contributed in-kind by participating entities. The planning process involved over 200 stakeholders from local governments, academia, and social organizations, along with more than 500 surveys conducted within communities to ensure alignment with real needs and national adaptation priorities.
Following approval by the Green Climate Fund board, resources are expected to become progressively available toward the end of 2026. Project implementation is projected to begin in early 2027. Authorities say this approach will help reduce climate risk while addressing inequality—particularly gender gaps—and promote sustainable production systems.
With FORECCSA+’s approval, Ecuador reaffirms its commitment to tackling climate change through practical solutions developed collaboratively at both national and international levels.
