The Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport (MIT) in Ecuador is undertaking a significant maintenance project on the “Y” de Baeza – Narupa – Coca road, part of the Troncal Amazónica. The government has allocated more than $37 million to this initiative.
According to MIT’s zonal subsecretary, Yésica Aigaje, and technical staff, work is ongoing on the Guamaní – Loreto section, including laying new asphalt, building protective walls, installing drainage systems, and milling old pavement. These activities have reached 50% completion.
Other sections such as Coca – Loreto – Huataraco and “Y” de Baeza – Virgen de Guacamayos now feature double-layered pavement along with vertical and horizontal signage.
Critical areas between Guamaní and Huaticocha have also been addressed. The road surface and protective walls were restored there. The project is providing local employment opportunities that directly benefit around 250 families in the area.
Tania Tanguila, a teacher at Eloy Siquihua Educational Unit, said: “Road maintenance will allow many educational centers in the area to make improvements in their recreational spaces.”
Aigaje stated: “At least a dozen communities will be able to improve access to their populations with the milled material from the change of asphalt layer.”
“In MIT we continue working to strengthen road infrastructure between Napo and Orellana, improving connectivity, comfort in travel and productive, economic and tourist development of the region,” added Aigaje.
