The Ministry of Education, Sport and Culture announced on Apr. 8 that it will provide 675,000 free school uniform kits to students in public schools for the upcoming Costa academic year 2026-2027. The distribution is aimed at ensuring access, retention, and well-being of children and adolescents in the national education system.
The initiative focuses on supporting students from rural areas and those in vulnerable situations by supplying uniforms to both Hispanic and intercultural bilingual education systems. Each kit contains six items: three white round-neck t-shirts made from jersey fabric, two grey sweatpants, and one grey sweatshirt with institutional embroidery. These garments are produced according to technical quality standards designed for durability and comfort during daily school activities.
According to the ministry’s announcement, the program also seeks to promote educational equity by narrowing economic gaps among students. The government has involved participants from the popular and solidarity economy sector in manufacturing these uniforms as a way to strengthen local economies.
For students enrolled in intercultural bilingual education programs, the kits follow similar technical specifications but include elements that respect each community’s cultural identity. This aligns with Ecuador’s broader policy of inclusion and diversity within its educational framework.
Distribution will be carried out progressively through zonal and district coordinations so that all recipients receive their uniforms before classes begin. “With these actions, the National Government reaffirms its commitment to inclusive, free, and quality education by creating suitable conditions for comprehensive student development throughout the country,” said ministry officials.
