The government of Ecuador has opened a new free Digital Point in Azogues, Cañar province, as part of its ongoing efforts to expand digital access across the country. The initiative is expected to benefit more than 36,000 residents in the area.
This addition brings the total number of free Digital Points in Cañar to 15. The project is part of a broader national strategy to promote digital inclusion and improve opportunities for families throughout Ecuador.
At the inauguration event, acting minister Ricardo Gutiérrez said, “Technology is a tool that opens paths, drives entrepreneurship, strengthens education and allows more citizens to access essential services.”
The new facility offers internet access at no cost and provides training through over 400 digital courses. It also supports local entrepreneurship by giving people tools to develop their businesses and enhance their skills for today’s digital world.
According to official figures, the nationwide Digital Points project has recorded 9.7 million visits and provided training in information and communication technologies (ICT) to 544 citizens. There are currently 978 Digital Points operating across Ecuador.
Officials say these results demonstrate the government’s commitment to digital transformation and reducing the technology gap, allowing more people to connect with educational, employment and social opportunities.
The Ministry of Telecommunications and Information Society (MINTEL) describes this project as emblematic of its mission to reduce the digital divide and create a more connected Ecuador.
