The Ecuadorian government’s current public policies in the hydrocarbon sector are aimed at encouraging both state and private oil production. These policies focus on technical efficiency, environmental sustainability, and respect for local communities.
Within this framework, Andes Petroleum Ecuador and Gran Tierra Energy have advanced their exploration efforts, resulting in the discovery of three new wells. The combined output from these wells is expected to add over 4,000 barrels per day to Ecuador’s national oil production.
Andes Petroleum has completed initial testing at the Johanna Sur 1 exploratory well in Block 62 – Tarapoa, located in Sucumbíos province. This well is projected to contribute an average of 650 barrels per day. Andes Petroleum operates with Chinese capital and aligns its activities with government plans through coordination with the Ministry of Environment and Energy.
Gran Tierra Energy has fulfilled its exploration commitments in Block 50 – Charapa (Sucumbíos), where two productive wells were discovered:
• Conejo A-01 well is expected to produce an average of 2,100 barrels daily with an initial crude quality of 26º API.
• Conejo A-02 well is forecasted to add about 1,500 barrels per day with a crude quality of 29º API.
According to the government, “The country’s hydrocarbon sector is consolidating as a strategic area for the national economy. In 2026, the National Government will maintain a concrete policy regarding the oil industry, which focuses on increasing exploration and sustained production with an emphasis on sustainability and improving quality of life for Amazonian inhabitants.”
Gran Tierra Energy operates blocks 50–Charapa, 51–Chanangue, and 89–Iguana. Andes Petroleum manages operations in Block 62 – Tarapoa.
