The Ministry of Public Health (MSP) in Ecuador has expanded its human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination program to include all people living with HIV aged 15 to 45 who are linked to Comprehensive Care Units. This change aims to improve immunization efforts by focusing on a group at higher risk for diseases related to HPV.

Vice President María José Pinto played a role in strengthening health promotion and prevention actions at the Dr. José Daniel Rodríguez Maridueña Infectology Hospital in Guayaquil, specifically through broadening the age range for HPV vaccination among people living with HIV.

According to the MSP, this initiative is part of broader strategies designed to address sexually transmitted infections and prevent various types of cancer. The ministry states that it aligns with the government’s commitment to move toward universal health coverage, as outlined in the Sustainable Development Goals of Agenda 2030, ensuring equitable access to timely and quality health services.

People living with HIV who begin their vaccination schedule before turning 46 will receive all three required doses, following current health regulations. The HPV vaccine not only helps prevent cervical cancer but also reduces risks for cancers of the mouth, throat, genitals, vulva, and perianal area.

Ongoing collaboration between the MSP and the Infectology Hospital is intended to improve quality of life and health outcomes for people living with HIV. The ministry emphasizes its institutional commitment “with comprehensive care based on human rights, prevention, equity and zero stigma.”

Service users have noted positive experiences with these programs. José Luis Montaño, a beneficiary of both comprehensive care and vaccination strategy, said he is grateful for ongoing support: “We feel protected and supported by the health system thanks to clear information and free access to HPV vaccination provided by the hospital.”

The ministry encourages eligible individuals to visit Comprehensive Care Units where physicians will assess them for vaccination eligibility. Coordination occurs with Atarazana Health Center at José Mascote and Julián Coronel streets from Monday through Friday between 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.

“The prevention is a key tool for reducing risks and strengthening individual and collective health,” stated MSP officials.
