The Ministry of Public Health (MSP) of Ecuador has received official confirmation that the country maintains its status in the “Sustained Elimination of Measles and Rubella” category. This recognition comes from the Regional Commission for Monitoring and Reverification of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO).
Ecuador now stands among countries with strong epidemiological performance, including Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, El Salvador, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay, and the English-speaking Caribbean.
Under the leadership of Vice President María José Pinto, the government ensures a strategic reserve of MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) vaccines as well as syringes and other necessary supplies to prevent outbreaks in case imported cases occur.
The Ministry highlighted the importance of public cooperation. “Measles is a highly contagious disease that can cause serious complications such as blindness, pneumonia or encephalitis,” according to an official statement.
The MSP urges citizens to follow the childhood vaccination schedule: one dose of MMR vaccine at 12 months and a booster at 18 months.
The government states it remains committed to building a comprehensive health system that prioritizes disease prevention.
