The Government of Ecuador, through the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport (MIT), is moving forward with its program to provide free housing for vulnerable families in the provinces of Azuay and Cañar. The initiative aims to ensure dignified living conditions as part of the government’s broader housing policy.
In El Tambo, located in Cañar province, three women—Ana, Mery, and Martha—who are heads of their households, have received fully subsidized homes built on land they own. These new houses are described by officials as a direct response to longstanding demands from families who have waited years for an opportunity to own a home.
During a technical visit, Daniel Elmir, Vice Minister of Sustainable Urban Development and Housing, reviewed construction progress and spoke with beneficiaries. He noted that these families began their application process five years ago. “Today, thanks to the political decision and drive of President Daniel Noboa’s government, this dream is close to becoming reality,” said Elmir.
The houses feature three bedrooms along with a living room, dining area, kitchen, and bathroom. Construction has reached 75% completion and the homes are expected to be delivered within weeks. The total investment for this phase is about USD 200,000.
As part of his visit to the region, Elmir also took part in discussions with representatives from Austro’s construction sector. The meeting focused on projects carried out during 2025 as well as projections for 2026. Elmir highlighted the construction sector’s key role in economic recovery.
He stated: “At the national level, the construction sector generated nearly 10,000 formal jobs, recorded growth of 8%, and enabled more than 7,300 families to obtain their first home through the Tu Casa Miti-Miti program.” He added that this program remains central to government housing policy.
In Cuenca city alone there are over 400 registered projects under Miti-Miti. During his tour Elmir visited two such developments: Laos building in Misicata district and Bemani condominium which is adding a new block of apartments. Together these initiatives offer 84 new homes priced between USD 32,700 and USD 110,000.
Officials say these actions demonstrate ongoing commitment by Ecuador’s government to improve access to housing while supporting construction as an economic driver.
