Corporación Favorita announced on March 10 that it will surpass the milestone of planting 275,000 native trees in Ecuador by 2028 as part of its ongoing ecological restoration and water source protection efforts. The company reported that since 2020, it has planted nearly 200,000 native plants in key water protection areas such as the Ponce Paluguillo Water Reserve, Cerro Puntas, Atacazo, Nanegal, and the micro-watersheds of Tomebamba, Machángara, Yanuncay, Tarqui, Jadán, and Aguilán.

The initiative aims to support ecological restoration and safeguard vital water sources for local communities. Between 2025 and 2028, Corporación Favorita plans to plant an additional 75,000 trees—25,000 each year—bringing the total number of trees planted from 2020 to over 275,000. The company said this program is one of its most significant environmental projects.

As part of this new phase of commitment to the environment and with technical support from FONAG (Fondo para la Protección del Agua), Corporación Favorita and ten partner brands recently planted 500 polylepis trees in the Ponce Paluguillo Water Reserve. This event marked the beginning of a new stage in their ecological restoration program. Since launching these efforts in 2020, more than 170 hectares have been restored in strategic water recharge zones.

During a recent tree-planting event held on February 20 as part of the new cycle for the Puntos GIRA project and ongoing restoration programs started five years ago, Andrés Gómez de la Torre, Sustainability Manager at GIRA, said: “When we launched the project in 2020, we did so thinking about conserving sensitive areas to protect our water sources. What we do today is for the future—for our children and grandchildren.”

The reforestation activities are carried out with specialized technical guidance and involve local communities and nurseries. Over the years, more than 227 families have participated in these initiatives by generating employment opportunities and strengthening productive capacities within affected territories. Martín Vásconez, Deputy Sustainability Manager at Corporación Favorita said: “We are contributing new trees to Paluguillo’s páramo—a key ecosystem that captures carbon and preserves water for Quito city. These events also strengthen joint work with our suppliers and business partners around a common purpose.”

Each intervention includes follow-up care and technical maintenance to ensure survival and growth of newly planted species. Ecological restoration forms part of Corporación Favorita’s sustainability strategy aimed at promoting responsible business practices while supporting community well-being and environmental protection.
