In the early hours of December 11, an emergency response was launched in the rural community of San Marcos, located in Ecuador’s Carchi province. At approximately 2:30 a.m., a patient experiencing fetal death began her transfer from the local health post. Medical professionals accompanied her during this difficult journey.
“The road was not easy. The distances are long and the roads to the north are long, but no one should face an emergency alone,” said Dr. Kelly Fienco, obstetrician.
By 7:30 a.m., the patient arrived at Chical Health Center where she underwent immediate clinical evaluation. She was then transferred to Luis Gabriel Dávila Hospital in Tulcán, where a multidisciplinary team awaited to provide specialized care.
“This exemplary response was possible thanks to unprecedented collaboration between Zonal Health Coordination 1, zonal pre-hospital care, and Tulcán health centers. Each unit contributed its effort, expertise and humanity to ensure safe transfer and respectful accompaniment,” said Fernando Gallardo, Manager of Luis Dávila Hospital in Tulcán.
The Ministry of Public Health team continues to face daily challenges. According to officials, these efforts are now addressed collectively under the direction of Vice President María José Pinto.
Vice President Pinto reaffirmed her commitment to citizens’ health and well-being during this incident.
