The National Electricity Corporation (CNEL EP) is carrying out maintenance, upgrades, and modernization of the electrical system in Manabí province. The project has an estimated investment of about USD 819,000 and aims to provide reliable electricity to support tourism, production, and commercial activities in the region.
Work is underway at nine key substations: Puerto López, Puerto Cayo, Manta 4, Crucita, Bahía, San Vicente, Lodana, Caza Lagarto, and Barranco Colorado. Improvements are also being made to distribution networks and public lighting. These efforts are expected to benefit approximately 68,000 families by improving service continuity in tourist areas, commercial zones, and rural parts of the province.
The upgrades are also intended to help agricultural and industrial sectors by ensuring a stable power supply for irrigation systems, storage centers, small industries, and businesses. This reduces the risk of outages and improves service quality across 21 strategic areas. Francisco Morán, leader of artisanal fishermen in Puerto Cayo (Jipijapa canton), said: “Before we had outages that affected our work and visitors. Now the service is more stable and this can be seen every day in commerce and tourism.”
Ángel Erazo, general manager of CNEL EP stated: “We are strengthening the electrical infrastructure in strategic areas of the country to ensure a safe and reliable service that promotes productive, touristic and social development in Manabí.”
These actions are coordinated with the Ministry of Environment and Energy as part of public policy under Ecuador’s current government. The initiative focuses on modernizing the national electrical system to enhance energy security and improve citizens’ quality of life.
