During the night of Sunday, January 11, and the early hours of Monday, January 12, heavy rains and lightning affected the cantons of Guayaquil, Durán, Samborondón, and Daule. These weather conditions caused temporary disruptions to the electricity supply in several areas.

In response, Corporación Nacional de Electricidad (CNEL EP) immediately activated its contingency plans and deployed specialized technical staff to address issues with transformers, feeders, and other components of the distribution system. The problems were mainly due to lightning strikes.

Two significant alerts occurred on subtransmission lines in Durán and at the Flor de Bastión Substation. These incidents impacted neighborhoods such as El Recreo and along the Durán–Yaguachi road; Balerio Estacio, Tiwinza, Flor de Bastión, Asaad Bucaram II, among others.

By Monday morning, more than 200 incidents had been identified within CNEL’s concession area. Of these, 68 sectors in Guayaquil continued to receive progressive attention from crews. The company dispatched a team of 100 technicians supported by 17 bucket trucks and operational units who remain in the field carrying out corrective and preventive work to restore service and ensure public safety.

“CNEL EP ratifies its commitment to timely emergency response, continuity of electrical service and user well-being by keeping its technical teams on permanent alert against adverse weather events,” stated a representative from CNEL EP.
