The Central Termogas Machala, located in El Oro province, will soon reintegrate 65 megawatts (MW) into Ecuador’s electricity grid following the comprehensive repair of its 6FA-2 unit. This generation unit operates on natural gas, which reduces operational costs and ensures a process with fewer polluting emissions.
According to directives from the Government of El Nuevo Ecuador to speed up repairs of unavailable generation equipment, the main components of the turbocompressor for this unit have returned to Ecuador after being repaired at a specialized workshop in Houston, United States. The restored equipment is expected to be operational next month.
After completing customs procedures, technical staff from the contractor and professionals from Corporación Eléctrica del Ecuador (CELEC EP) – Termogas Machala began assembling the equipment. These efforts are intended to ensure asset integrity and safe, efficient operation.
“Termogas Machala has an installed capacity of 230 MW, with five TM-2500 units of 20 MW each and two 6FA units of 65 MW each. For these latter units, natural gas is used—a cleaner and more efficient source that contributes to environmentally responsible energy generation,” stated CELEC EP representatives.
With the recovery of its natural gas power generation park, CELEC EP reaffirms its commitment to maintaining strategic infrastructure and strengthening the reliability of electricity service in Ecuador.
